Installers we refer are insured to the best of our referral information. Before you hire anyone, you must verify their current insurance, business identity, local licensing, permit responsibility, references, and written scope.

Licensing and permits in Colorado: what to check

This trade's licensing rules are often misunderstood, and knowing them protects you.

Colorado has no statewide HVAC or mechanical contractor license. Heating and cooling contractors are not licensed at the state level.

Licensing happens locally. The City and County of Denver licenses mechanical contractors at the city level. Some other cities in the metro have their own contractor licensing. For example, Littleton publishes a licensed-contractor list. Requirements vary from city to city.

Permits depend on your exact address. Denver requires permits for mechanical work. Other cities and counties set their own rules. Before you start, confirm which jurisdiction your parcel is actually in. Do not assume one city's rule applies to another.

"Insured" is only one part of the picture. Ask any installer, whether we referred them or you found them yourself, for three things:

• Their local contractor license number, where your city requires one.
• A current certificate of insurance.
• Written confirmation that the permit is included in the quoted price.

Do not treat this website as proof that any installer complies with any requirement.

Estimates and equipment

The installer is responsible for their estimate, and the installer sets the price after seeing your home. When you review an estimate, it's reasonable to ask:

• What heating and cooling load was calculated, and how. A room-by-room load calculation is one method.
• Whether your existing ductwork was evaluated.
• Whether your electrical panel has enough capacity, and whether a new circuit is needed.
• What is and is not included.
• What warranty covers labor, as distinct from the manufacturer's coverage on parts.

A referral does not mean your home needs a heat pump or needs its current system replaced.

Price ranges published on this site are general planning information taken from published sources at the time of writing. They are not quotes, offers, or guarantees. Your actual price depends on your home, your equipment choices, and your installer.

Rebates, tax credits, and regulations

This site publishes information about several programs and rules:

• Xcel Energy rebates.
• Colorado's heat pump tax credit discount.
• Federal tax credits.
• State rebate programs.
• Local permit requirements.

That information is general and was believed accurate at the time of writing.

These things change. Rebate amounts are reduced or discontinued, eligibility rules are revised, and deadlines pass. Before you make a purchase decision, verify current amounts and requirements with the right party:

• Your utility, for rebates.
• The Colorado Energy Office, for state programs.
• The relevant taxing authority or a tax professional, for tax credits.
• Your local building department, for permits.

Any installer you are connected with is an independent business. They are not our employee, agent, partner, or joint venturer.

We do not supervise, direct, or control their work, scheduling, pricing, or personnel. Any agreement for work is between you and that installer.

No warranty

This website is provided "as is." We do not warrant that the information here is complete, current, or error-free, and we do not warrant any installer's work.

Any warranty on equipment or labor comes from the manufacturer or the installer, not from us.

Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by law, Heat Pump Installation Denver is not liable for an installer's acts, omissions, delays, pricing, communications, workmanship, or disputes. Our total liability arising from your use of this site is limited to one hundred dollars.

Direct questions about an installer's work to that installer.

Not safety advice

Some content on this site covers electrical panels, outdoor unit placement, refrigerant lines, and gas furnaces kept as backup in dual-fuel setups. That content is general homeowner information. It is not a safety inspection or professional advice.
